How Morse Code Audio Works

Morse code audio represents information using two types of signals: a short tone called a "dit" (dot) and a longer tone called a "dah" (dash), typically three times the length of a dit. These tones are generated at a specific audio frequency — usually between 400Hz and 800Hz — which determines the pitch you hear. The timing between signals, letters, and words follows strict ratios established by international standards, making Morse code a precise and universally understood system.

CW Radio Tone vs. Telegraph Sounder

In amateur radio, Morse code is transmitted as a continuous wave (CW) signal — a pure audio tone that can be heard clearly even through heavy static and interference. This is why CW remains one of the most reliable communication modes. The original telegraph used a mechanical sounder that produced distinct clicking sounds rather than tones. Modern practice typically uses electronic sidetone oscillators that produce a clean sine wave, though our generator also offers square and sawtooth waveforms for different audio characteristics.

Frequency Standards & Use Cases

The standard CW sidetone frequency used by most ham radio operators is between 500Hz and 700Hz, with 550Hz being a common choice. Lower frequencies (400Hz) are easier on the ears for extended listening, while higher frequencies (700-800Hz) cut through background noise better. Our audio library lets you generate and download Morse code audio for any purpose: amateur radio practice, educational presentations, film and game sound design, meditation or ASMR content, or embedding in creative projects. Use our generator for custom text, the decoder to convert Morse back to text, or the main translator for two-way conversion. Learn to recognize Morse by ear with our interactive trainer.
